This role is based at the BGS headquarters in Keyworth in Nottingham

UKRI Pay Band D – salary range is £31,931 to £34,709 (depending on qualifications and experience)

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced Environmental / Engineering Geophysicist to join the BGS Multi-hazards & Resilience (MHR) challenge area at our Headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham.

You will join an established dynamic team of researchers with a world-leading track record in the development of geophysical methods for monitoring complex near-surface earth systems and processes.

We have a strong focus on geohazard research, and have active projects concerned with landslide characterisation and monitoring, geo-energy, infrastructure monitoring, groundwater-surface water interactions, permafrost, nuclear waste disposal, mine waste and contaminant transport problems.

We would like you to undertake research to support and extend our existing activities, with a strong focus on developing our international geophysical observatory network for monitoring landslides as well as new monitoring infrastructure to underpin MHR science and other BGS challenge areas.

There will be a significant UK and overseas fieldwork component to this role. You will also be contributing to the further development of geophysical technology platforms (e.g. BGS PRIME technology) with the aim of automating 4D data capture, processing and visualisation for field observatories and laboratory programmes.

About you

We are looking for candidates with a PhD in environmental/engineering/near-surface geophysics or a closely related subject (either awarded or near to thesis submission) or substantial equivalent work experience, and a track record of scientific publications.

You will have the specialist skills, knowledge, and ability to apply geophysical methods (including field-based long term-monitoring, particularly with geoelectrical techniques) to a wide range of geoscience problems. This will include the ability to measure, analyse and interpret datasets acquired through undertaking field surveys, laboratory experiments or computer simulations.

Given that many of our projects are field-based and include international partners, we are seeking candidates with a full driving licence and who are enthusiastic to travel widely, both within the UK and overseas. You will have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and will also be expected to publish your findings in the peer-reviewed literature.
