Within the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, the School of Basic & Medical Biosciences, which is led by Professor Mathias Gautel, comprises five departments with a wide range of expertise and interests. Using a bench to bedside approach, the School aims to answer fundamental questions about biology in health and disease and apply this to the development of new and innovative clinical practise, alongside providing a rigorous academic programme for students.
About the Centre for Human & Applied Physiological Sciences
The Centre for Human & Applied Physiological Sciences (CHAPS) has a focus on fundamental questions regarding human physiological function and adaptation in health and disease and occupies an important nexus between basic biomedical sciences, clinical and applied research. It comprises four interlinking research groupings operating under an overarching strategy focused on furthering understanding of integrative human physiology. Our research encompasses a unique stem cell through to whole body systems approaches which is aimed at gaining insight into factors affecting human health, disease, biological ageing and exercise, as well as performance in the aerospace environment.
The post will be embedded in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment, where 75% of research is rated 4*/“world leading” (REF2021). The appointee will join an interactive group of investigators with expertise across a whole range of across our research groupings: Respiratory Physiology & Medicine, Skeletal and Cardiac Muscle: Form & Function, Neural Control of Human Movement, and Aerospace Physiology & Medicine.
CHAPS is committed to integrative and translational research which is facilitated by collaborations with other research groupings within King’s College London, King’s Health Partners, industry and the military.

The post will be affiliated with the teaching department of Physiotherapy which is responsible for the delivery of BSc Physiotherapy and the MSc Physiotherapy (pre-registration). The post-holder will join a team that includes expert educators to provide research-enhanced physiotherapy teaching and assessment that prepares graduates for effective working and leadership in the changing health and social care environment. Following recent curriculum development, both pre-registration programmes are innovative and embed strategic goals of King’s education strategy aligned to Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) new standards of proficiency including: inclusive education, leadership learning, digital health and addressing health inequalities and health promotion.

Researchers within the physiotherapy department collaborate widely with academic staff in other Schools and lead a research group for Rehabilitation and Health that utilises a variety of methodologies including epidemiology and informatics, clinical trials and mixed-methods approaches for evaluating health and healthcare interventions in people living with long term conditions.
