A bit about you and the role...
Do you have enthusiasm, drive and passion for environmental science, eager to join a greenhouse gas flux observations team, working on land-based solutions to the climate and ecological crises? If yes, then keep reading!
Contributing to field data collection across our network of our greenhouse gas monitoring sites in the UK and overseas, coordinating and delivering activities both independently and as part of a team of technicians and scientists. Working with state-of-the-art flux towers and environmental sensor networks to conduct detailed surveys of greenhouse gas emissions and water balance across a variety of ecosystems, from upland and lowland peatlands, to croplands, lakes and forests.
You will help support the collection, management, analysis and publication of our research data. You will regularly engage with stakeholders from a wide range of organisations, contribute to analyses and publications advancing the research you do!
Main Responsibilities
- Installation, operation and maintenance of field instrumentation across a network of eddy covariance sites in the UK and overseas
- Conducting field measurements and experimental data collection across a range of ecosystems (croplands, peatlands, bioenergy) using novel techniques for automated chamber-based greenhouse gas flux sampling
- Curation, analysis and interpretation of observational datasets. Scales of interest range from site to network level, including quantification of ecosystem carbon, nitrogen and water budgets, analysis of land surface processes and their environmental controls
- Communicating and supporting the publication of our datasets and research findings, building internal and external collaborations, supporting the development of future funded research activity
- Be the point of contact for farmers and other landowners across the UK, liaising with them regarding the planning of fieldwork activities
- Regular fieldwork to collect new data on greenhouse gas emissions, weather and soils
- Complete detailed field surveys of the soils and vegetation at the network sites
- Be responsible for regular maintenance of flux towers and other equipment on field sites across the UK
- Create and curate a database of new field data
- Prepare datasets for use in scientific data analysis, and contribute to the analysis and publication of these new datasets
