About the Role
We now have an opportunity for a Mechanical Technician within the Diamond Insertion Device group. Synchrotron insertion devices are permanent magnet assemblies which lie at the heart of the Diamond facility, generating the brilliant light that is used in the experiments.
The Mechanical Technician will contribute to the mechanical assembly, testing, installation, maintenance and upgrading of insertion devices.
Further responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out inspection of manufactured items to drawings.
- Carrying out machining to drawings, design jigs and fixtures and manufacture where necessary.
- Assisting with the maintenance and upgrading of existing insertion devices.
- Carrying out general laboratory/workshop work as required.
Some flexibility over working hours will be required during periods of intense activity, and occasional local travel may be required.
About You
Candidates should demonstrate a combination of proven technical experience, as well as an engineering apprenticeship or ONC or similar relevant qualification within engineering.
Experience would be advantageous in one of the following working environments:
- Cryogenics, permanent magnets, high pressures, ultra-high vacuum would be beneficial but is not essential as training will be provided.
- Familiarity in quality assurance procedures and work planning and safe systems of work
We are seeking someone with precision mechanical assembly skills, or an interest in learning those skills.
You should have experience in a mechanical workshop environment and be familiar with measuring instruments, alignment methods and ideally have some machining experience. You will demonstrate the ability to understand and interpret mechanical drawings.
You will demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, to interact with people at all levels.
