Background:
This is an exciting opportunity to join major global research team at the Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage (BCES), University of Birmingham and a consortium of 20 international partners across 9 EU countries
This position is part of the international research project ‘THUMBS UP: Thermal energy storage Solutions to optimally Manage Buildings and Unlock their grid balancing and flexibility Potential’
The overarching goal of the project is to develop ultra-energy efficient thermal energy storage (TES) technologies with innovative designs, materials and control strategies to optimally manage energy demand and supply in zero-carbon buildings. the TES technologies will be developed, tested and validated both in the lab and in real buildings.
Role Summary
Research:
Your work will contribute to develop a unique smart thermal energy storage system that will combine latent heat storage, heat pumps, and integration with the heating/cooling distribution in buildings (single/multi-family buildings, and buildings connected to district networks)
The Research fellow will address ambitious technical and scientific challenges around the new thermal energy storage design and prototyping, phase change materials (PCMs), TES manufacturing, and integration in buildings; activities will include
- Thermo-fluid dynamic design, prototyping of the proposed TES system
- Fabrication, testing and validation of the proposed system in labs and in buildings
- Phase change Materials (PCM) Optimization
- Integration of the proposed TES system in three different real buildings
The research will ultimately lead to new disruptive technology for energy storage, heating, and cooling in zero carbon buildings.

Person Specification
You should hold a relevant PhD (or be near completion) together with relevant experience and have a strong track record of relevant publications and proven delivery of projects outputs. You will also possess a strong background in engineering thermodynamics, computational thermo-fluid dynamics and heat transfer. Experience and ability to design, experimentally develop, construct and test thermal systems related to the project area is desirable. Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings are also required.
